There’s Nothing Natural About Drug-Induced Dementia

Monday, November 30th, 2009

It’s absolutely heartbreaking. All over America, nursing homes are filled with frail, feeble residents suffering from dementia. In many cases, these folks are so far gone they don’t even recognize their own children. But I’m going to let you in on a dark, dirty secret: Many of these patients do not have dementia at all. Their memory loss, confusion, and delirium are caused by prescription drugs! And so are many of their other problems.

IPM Recognized for Quality in Laboratory Services

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

The Institute of Progressive Medicine has met all criteria for Laboratory Accreditation by COLA, a national diagnostic laboratory accreditation organization. Accreditation is given only to laboratories that apply rigid standards of quality in day-to-day operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing, and pass a rigorous on-site laboratory survey. IPM has earned COLA accreditation as a result of a long-term commitment to provide quality service to its patients.

COLA is a nonprofit, physician-directed organization promoting quality and excellence in medicine and patient care through programs of voluntary education, achievement, and accreditation.

COLA is approved by the federal government and sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, American Society of Internal Medicine, and the American Osteopathic Association.

Incidence of Autism in California

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

As the incidence of autism continues to grow at an alarming rate, researchers are now saying that the 7-8 fold increase in autism seen in California cannot simply be explained by improved diagnostic techniques or changes in how those with the condition are counted.

The researchers go on to say that, “it’s time to start looking for the environmental culprits responsible for the remarkable increase in the rate of autism in California,” including environmental chemical and infectious microbes.

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Strokes, Heart Disease, Says New Study

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Insufficient intake of vitamin D, long known to play a key role in bone health, may significantly increase a person’s risk of stroke, heart disease and even death, a US study said Monday.

Examining 27,686 Utah patients aged 50 or older with no history of cardiovascular disease, the study found those with very low vitamin D levels were 77 percent more likely to die early than those with normal levels.

They were also found to be 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 78 percent were more likely to have a stroke, said the research by the Heart Institute at the Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Those with very low levels of vitamin D were twice as likely to develop heart failure, said the study which was due to be presented later Monday at a conference organized by the American Heart Association in Orlando, Florida.

Ordinary school cleaning supplies can expose children to multiple chemicals linked to asthma, cancer, and other documented health problems and to hundreds of other air contaminants that have never been tested for safety, a study by the Environmental Working Group shows. Laboratory tests done for EWG found that a typical assortment of cleaning products released 457 distinct chemicals into the air.

Fun facts…

Magnesium, muscles and mortality.

A small segment of the population have genetic mutations that cause them to have very low levels of magnesium, which can cause altered heart beats, seizures, and involuntary muscle contraction.

In addition, it has been estimated that up to 60% of critically ill patients have low levels, and this is associated with increased mortality.

It is very easy to supplement magnesium, which is often given along with calcium in a balanced formula. Natural Calm + Calcium is an excellent powdered calcium and magnesium formula. IPM also carries Magnesium Citrate in 500mg capsules.
