Breaking a hip in old age can obviously be traumatic but a recent study has determined that it can increase the incidence of death within the following 5 years by 25%. Hip fractures are much more common in those patients with thinner bone caused by osteoporosis. For this reason, it is very important that patients have their bone density tested regularly.
Those at risk for osteoporosis should take a comprehensive bone support formula. IPM’s Osteo Complex provides all the bone supportive nutrients needed to restore healthy bones, and delivers these vitamins and minerals in their most absorbable forms.
Treating children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) usually involves the same steroids-based medication prescribed to adults. But such treatments can have negative side effects for kids and teens dealing with IBD.
Dr. Raanan Shamir of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler School of Medicine and Schneider Children’s Medical Centre shows that there is another path to treating IBD in children: a nutritional formula that was first developed for astronauts. This supplement puts 60-70% of children with Crohn’s disease, a common IBD disorder, into remission — a success rate similar to that of traditional steroid-based drugs, but without side effects like malnutrition and growth retardation.
Investigators from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York conducted a study in which they reviewed the medical records of 847 people who had received at least one treatment of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy over a four-year period for a variety of conditions, including immune deficiencies, leukemia or other types of cancer, anemia and other diseases. Then, using records pulled from a database of 20 million patients aged 65 or older developed by SDI Health, they compared those results against 84,700 who were not given IVIg treatment. (more…)
My wife and I always take our kids with us when we go grocery shopping. It gives us the opportunity to teach them how to recognize sneaky labeling and deceptive brand names, and how to pick the best foods for a healthy meal.
We show them how to read labels so they don’t get ensnared in grocery store fat traps. We teach them to look for things like high fructose corn syrup, MSG, dextrose, and sucrose. And we explain how to avoid the hormone smashers that evaporate muscles. These include many sports drinks, juices, and flavored teas with words related to “health” or “nutrition” in their names.
Then we help them select a healthy balance of the right foods. We let our kids pick out their own veggies, which gets them excited about eating them. We also let them help prepare their meals – and that gets them even more excited about healthy eating. (more…)
DHA, a polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish oil, was found to significantly decrease the nephrotoxicity (kidney toxicity) of the chemotherapy drug cisplatin. Also, when used alone in rat models, DHA significantly reduced the size of solid tumors, reduced levels of CRP (c-Reactive Protein), LC (Leukocyte count) and MDA (malondialdehyde), a marker of lipid peroxides and oxidation.
Mega Omega is a high potency omega oils containing EPA and DHA in a 4:3 ratio. Mega Omega is recommended for cardiovascular and neurological support. (more…)
It is common practice for physicians to replace street drugs with psychiatric drugs, so the drug abuser is never freed from drugs. He is merely switched from illegal drugs to legal drugs. In our practice we work to get people entirely off drugs. Whether they have been taking alcohol, sedatives, amphetamines, cocaine, alcohol, or combinations of drugs, our program, over time, gets them off everything.
Unfortunately, many doctors make a distinction between legal prescription drugs and illegal street drugs, as if the prescription drugs were beneficial. They are not. They just serve to keep the individual in a different drugged state, and to keep him from regaining control over his own life. (more…)
**Note: Increasing the dietary intake of dairy products is not an ideal solution for everyone worried about vitamin D deficiency, especially those with milk allergies or lactose intolerance. The doctors at IPM highly recommend that children and adults take a high quality multivitamin containing vitamin D. A simple blood test available at IPM can determine your vitamin D status and help your doctor decide if additional supplementation is needed. The following are links to relevant products available in the IPM online store:
Vitamin D capsules are also available in 5000IU and 1000IU strength

A whopping 70 percent of American kids aren’t getting enough vitamin D, and such youngsters tend to have higher blood pressure and lower levels of good cholesterol than their peers, according to two new studies published this week in the journal Pediatrics. Low vitamin D levels also may increase a child’s risk of developing heart disease later in life, experts say.
“We were astounded at how common it was,” says study author Dr. Michal Melamed, an assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology, and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, New York. “There is a lot of data that suggests adults with low vitamin-D levels are at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and a lot of cancers, and if kids start out with low levels and never increase them, they may be putting themselves at risk for developing all of these diseases at a much earlier age.”
People often go through times of depression due to job loss, relocation, loss of a loved one, divorce, and many other situations that cause us to feel insecure. Our bodies do have natural ways of dealing with these emotions especially if people use healthy means including adequate sleep, exercise, healthy eating and emotional support from friends and family.
SSRI/SNRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors/Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) are antidepressant drugs that interfere with the body-mind’s normal functioning. These drugs are literally mind-altering. They can cause people to terminate loving, supportive relationships with family and friends, the very relationships that are extremely important to helping people recover from depression. The drugs can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and mania.
There is a direct correlation with the increase of antidepressant drug use and the rise in extreme, senseless violent acts. There are experts who have been trying to bring this to the attention of physicians, the FDA, and the public for more than a decade. Depression is not the problem. The drugs are the problem.
In 2001, GlaxoSmithKline was ordered to pay $6.4 million to the surviving family members after 60 year old Donald Schnell flew into a rage and killed his wife, daughter, and granddaughter only 48 hours after he began to take Paxil.
“I keep asking, when is somebody going to see this? But we’ve been so brainwashed about drugs. We think legal means safe,” Ann Blake Tracy, Ph.D. explains. “Most people don’t know that LSD once was legal and prescribed as a wonder drug. That PCP was considered to have a large margin of safety in humans. Most people don’t know that ecstasy was prescribed for treatment of depression until five years before Prozac was introduced to the market.” (more…)
The popular herbal extract St. John’s wort is more effective at treating the symptoms of depression than any antidepressant drug, and has fewer side effects, researchers from the Centre for Complementary Medicine in Munich have concluded.
“Overall, the St John’s Wort extracts tested in the trials were superior to placebo, similarly effective as standard anti-depressants, and had fewer side effects than standard anti-depressants,” lead researcher Klaus Linde said.

A combination of vitamin D3 and curcumin, from turmeric, may boost the immune system, and help it clear the protein plaques linked to Alzheimer’s, says a new study.
Previous research by same scientists found that there are two types of Alzheimer’s patients: Type 1 patients, who respond positively to curcuminoids, and Type II patients, who do not. This depends on the genes MGAT III and TLR-3 that are associated with the immune system’s ability to better ingest amyloid beta, said the researchers.
