Bake Your Fish, Don’t Fry It

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012
Of 260 normal older adults, those who ate baked or broiled fish weekly, but not fried fish, had greater gray matter volume in areas of the brain responsible for cognition and memory.  After 15 years, 47% of those who didn’t have fish at least once a week developed Alzheimer disease or other cognitive impairment, compared to 28% of those who ate fish regularly. Pomegranate Juice – Juice From The Tree of Life

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Ancient religions and the mystery traditions have always used the pomegranate tree and its fruit in symbol and decoration and myth, and alchemists and the hermetic traditions have often used it in symbolic form for its many esoteric connections to the ‘Tree of Life’, the Qabbalah, and other spiritual streams.

History

The pomegranate is also the traditional representation of fertility and life, and seems to have its origins everywhere, particularly through the Mediterranean, up to Georgia and across to China and to India – there is even a Sanskrit word for the fruit, and Indian royalty always included it in banquet and ritual.

There are many European references to pomegranates and they were to be found growing wild in Georgia in 1772. The Spanish Conquistadores took the pomegranate to America and Jesuit missionaries carried it north to their missions in California.

With so much scientific and medical interest being shown in the current era, it seems almost that this fruit is special beyond others, that it has been singled out as a gift to the human race.

And other questions arise: the pomegranate tree lives a very long time and suffers, like the fruit, almost no disease or damage by pests. Is this tree actually keeping its own health? Are its powerful antioxidants actually keeping the tree healthy too?

Why has it been selected by many cultures and religions to represent fertility, good health and good luck, rather than other fruit?

Why are there so many contradictions in the fruit? It is sweet, and yet tart; the fruit is tough and wrinkled, and yet when open is rich and red and sweet. It has been called the fruit of the underworld, with strong connections to Persephone, and yet the Koran calls it the fruit of paradise. It is so hard to eat the fruit and then eventually so rewarding.

In the field of vibrational healing, we are always dealing with the human system as a ‘bio-field’, or field of information or energy, which at the most fundamental levels operates on energies of all qualities. All the medications and foods we take are consumed because we wish to incorporate the energetics of those substances in our ‘energy fields’. And it is the quality of the energetics of any substance that is of the highest importance.

I believe that the pomegranate has always been recognised as a fruit which holds a particularly potent energetic charge. It is in the look of the fruit, the taste of the juice, the colour of the arils, the variety of its many qualities. Anyone who pays attention to what their senses (including the more subtle senses) are telling them will soon know whether a substance will enhance their health and energy. Naturally occurring pomegranates and their juice register high on the list of those which do enhance.

The Impact of One Man’s Outrage

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

One sometimes hears that the common citizen is helpless and can do nothing against the mega “powers that be.” It’s just one person against the corporate giants that have the money and media on their side. Might as well just go with the tide.

Ivan Royster will beg to differ.

Recently, the New York Times, no less, covered a Facebook page he had created called “The Ban of High Fructose Corn Syrup in the U.S.” The reason for the coverage was the page’s popularity: 120,000 followers and growing. The Times thought the popularity merited not only the article but an opposing viewpoint from the Corn Refiners Association.

Yes, Ivan Royster, an “ordinary” guy from Raleigh, North Carolina, working a job at a local university library, had come face to face and was squaring off with some of the biggest corporations on the planet.

What led him to that position? It’s actually pretty simple: he saw something he thought wasn’t right and decided to find out about it. Then he decided to share his discoveries and outrage with the world through the Internet.

Food Irradiation for Food Safety?

Monday, May 24th, 2010

If you’ve seen the film  Food, Inc., you know that our industrial food system can be severely unsanitary. With the cramped conditions in which animals are bred, raised and slaughtered, it is no wonder that diseases such as E. coli spread so easily and end up in supermarkets and fast-food outlets. Because cattle ranches supply fertilizer to produce farms, such diseases can be spread to our fruits and vegetables as well.

Instead of solving the basic problems of sanitation in the food industry, a recent solution put into effect by food producers to prevent the spread of such bacteria is to irradiate food. According to research conducted by the Center for Food Safety (CFS), food irradiation uses high-energy gamma rays, electron beams or X-rays—all of which are millions of times more powerful than standard medical X-rays—to break apart the bacteria and insects that can hide in meat, grains and other foods.

FDA Says Walnuts Are Drugs

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Life Extension has published 57 articles that describe the health benefits of walnuts.

Some of this same scientific data is featured on the website of Diamond Foods, Inc., a distributor of packaged walnuts.

The FDA has determined that walnuts sold by Diamond Foods cannot be legally marketed because the walnuts “are not generally recognized as safe and effective” for the medical conditions referenced on Diamond Foods’ website.

According to the FDA, these walnuts are now classified as “drugs“ and the unauthorized health claims” cause them to become “misbranded”, thus subjecting them to government “seizure or injunction“.

Let’s take a look at the science supporting the consumption of walnuts to see what the FDA is up to…and what you can do to stop it!

Olive Oil Dampens Genes Responsible for Inflammation

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

OlivesSpanish researchers identify 98  genes whose inflammatory activity is dampened by consumption of olive oil, suggesting the underlying mechanism by which it exerts beneficial effects on chronic conditions from arthritis to heart disease. Francisco Perez-Jimenez, from University of Cordoba (Spain),and colleagues studied 20 patients with metabolic syndrome, who ate breakfast foods covered in two types of olive oil, either extra virgin olive oil (high in phenol compounds), or a low-phenol oil.   Those subjects who ate the breakfast containing olive oil rich in phenolic compounds were found to have a reduced expression of pro-inflammatory genes associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes, as compared to those who ate the low-phenolic olive oil breakfast.  Concluding that: “This study shows that intake of a breakfast based in virgin olive oil rich in phenol compounds is able to repress the in vivo expression of several pro-inflammatory genes, thereby switching the activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to a less deleterious inflammatory profile,” the researchers submit that: “These results provide at least a partial molecular basis for the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease observed in Mediterranean countries, where virgin olive oil represents the main source of dietary fat.”
